DIY Starry Snake Paper Bookmark

Who says bookmarks have to be boring?

I made this handmade paper bookmark inspired by a starry night sky. It has a winding, snake-like shape covered in shades of green, with tiny stars, moons, and dots painted across it.

The best part? It was made completely by hand!

Materials Needed

For this bookmark, I used:

  • Thick paper or cardstock
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • White paint or a white gel pen
  • Green alcohol markers (G 56, BG 51, G 54, G 43, CG 5, BG 9) You can also use acrylic paints if alcohol markers are not available.
  • – A little creativity! ✨

✏️ Step 1: Draw the Shape

First, I drew the basic shape of the bookmark on a sheet of paper.

Instead of making a regular rectangular bookmark, I decided to make it curvy and winding, almost like a long, magical trail.

I sketched the shape lightly with a pencil so I could adjust it before painting.

You can print the outlined shape from the picture below-

✂️ Step 2: Cut It Out

Once I was happy with the shape, I carefully cut around the outline.

I made sure to cut slowly around the curves because the shape has lots of twists and bends.

And voilà—the basic bookmark was ready!

🎨 Step 3: Color the Base

Next came the fun part: adding colors!

I covered the bookmark in different shades of green. Instead of using just one flat colour, I layered darker and lighter greens to give it more depth and make it look less plain.

🌌 Step 4: Add the Night-Sky Details

Once the green paint was dry, I used white pen to add tiny stars, moons, dots, and little sparkles all over the bookmark.

I didn’t make every star identical. Some are large, some are tiny, and some are just little dots.

That makes the pattern feel more like an actual night sky—random, scattered, and a little magical. ⭐

✨ Step 5: Add the Final Details

Finally, I went back over a few areas to add extra details and highlights.

I added more tiny stars and dots wherever the bookmark looked a little empty.

This was also the stage where I could fix any areas that needed a little more color or definition.

📖 The Finished Bookmark

And that’s it! My finished bookmark is ready to go straight into a fantasy novel. 📚

I especially like how the unusual shape makes it look different from a normal bookmark. The green background combined with the white stars and moons gives it a little enchanted-night-sky vibe.

And because I made it myself, it’s not just something keeping my page—it is also a tiny piece of my artwork living inside my book. 💚

💭 Final Thoughts

Making a bookmark doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

A piece of paper, some paint, and a ridiculous amount of tiny stars can turn into something you can actually use every time you read. 😂⭐

I think that’s one of my favourite things about handmade crafts: they don’t have to be perfect to be special.

This one started as a simple sheet of paper and ended up becoming my own little piece of the night sky.

🌙 Happy reading—and may your pages never lose their place! 📖✨
